SeniorTex - Smart modular garments and special textile products with integrated electronic microsystems to improve the health care of the aging population and people with disabilities

  • Project Number:  FV10111
  • Provider:  Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic
  • Lead Institution: VÚB a.s.

Partners:

  • Technical University of Liberec
  • University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Faculty of Electrical Engineering
  • University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Faculty of Health Care Studies

Project Information:

The project aims to achieve new functional properties of clothing for seniors and individuals with disabilities. This is based on the use of advanced fibers, textile construction, and the design of special garments incorporating microelectronics. The application of wearable electronics introduces new possibilities and diagnostic methods, including: measuring skin moisture (for hydration monitoring); measuring swelling and regulating compression of stockings and bandages for the treatment of venous ulcers, as well as long-term monitoring of lower limb swelling; and enabling controlled heating of garments, which is particularly beneficial for seniors and individuals with disabilities.

The project also focuses on significantly improving the sensory and physiological comfort of garments for seniors and individuals with disabilities compared to existing clothing used in healthcare and long-term care settings. This goal will be achieved through the use of advanced specialty fibers with antibacterial and other functional properties, innovative textile construction and surface structures, and ergonomic garment design. The garments will be developed to allow for easy integration of microelectronics while ensuring practical maintenance through both washing and dry cleaning. Lower limb swelling monitoring will be addressed with specialized clothing accessories featuring integrated sensors.

The project has a strong interdisciplinary nature, combining expertise from the textile industry, electrical engineering, and healthcare. In the textile industry, it fosters the development of new materials and technologies for smart textile applications. In electronics, it focuses on entirely new flexible and textile-based sensors, including their integration. For healthcare, the project introduces innovative solutions for long-term monitoring of selected physiological parameters, which have previously been limited to outpatient clinical settings.

This project was implemented with financial support from the state budget through the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Concept of coordination and implementation of cross-border cooperation of emergency medical services

GURD_logo_banner_mensi

  • Project Number:  30
  • Provider:  Cross-border Cooperation Program / Czech Republic - Free State of Bavaria
  • Lead Institution: Bayerisches Rotes Kreuz

Partners:

  • University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Faculty of Health Care Studies
  • Emergency Medical Service of the Pilsen Region, Public Institution
  • Technische Hochschule Deggendorf

Project Information:

The Bavarian Red Cross on one side of the border and the Emergency Medical Service of the Pilsen Region on the other side provide emergency medical services in the border region, extending up to the border itself. However, due to the lack of legislation, differing operational structures, information gaps, and language barriers, it is currently not possible to ensure fast, high-quality, efficient, and legally compliant cross-border medical assistance.

The aim of our project is to define the conditions and establish the fundamental framework for a practically applicable, routinely used, and legally supported structured cross-border cooperation of emergency medical services in both participating countries.

This is a pilot project, and its results are expected to lead to the creation of a sustainable, bilateral integrated emergency service network embedded in the daily practice of emergency response teams. Given the project's focus on long-term sustainability and the transfer of knowledge and expertise, academic institutions from both the Bavarian and Czech sides—TH Deggendorf and the Faculty of Health Care Studies, University of West Bohemia—are also project partners. These institutions train future healthcare professionals and have experts in emergency medical fields who are essential for the successful implementation of the project. The project partners, including universities, will not only ensure the quality of implementation but also provide a long-term source of highly qualified emergency medical service personnel who, even before entering practice, will be well-prepared for their tasks in the newly emerging network and service conditions. Comparable projects of this scale have not been implemented before. From the BRK’s perspective, the project is seen as having a Bavaria-wide impact. These project objectives also require the establishment of new organizational structures, including new personnel arrangements.

The proposed project has been in preparation by both sides for several years, and the planned key activities are the result of long-term efforts. A total of nine key activities have been developed, formulated in the project as work packages:

  • Analysis and solution proposals
  • Joint exercises
  • Internships
  • Training, seminars, and education
  • Conferences
  • Meetings and workshops
  • Joint coordination center
  • Simulator
  • Project organization and management
